About Alex Cooper

I am an award-winning journalist with 11 years of experience in the industry. Originally from Montreal, I grew up skiing, playing hockey, playing with Lego, and reading. I moved to Toronto for university, where I studied International Relations, and after graduation, worked for a newswire service, editing and distributing press releases on behalf of clients.

After a few years, I decided to pursue an old dream of becoming a journalist. Back in high school, I wanted to be a sports reporter, but now I was interested in current affairs. I enrolled in the post-university journalism program at Humber College and interned at the Toronto Star and Columbia Valley Pioneer while there. After graduation, I found myself lured to the small mountain town of Revelstoke, where I thought I’d gain some more experience, enjoy life in the mountains, then leave for bigger pastures.

Revelstoke lured me in, like it does with so many, and my love of the mountains emerged, One year became two, which became four. I was promoted to become editor of the Revelstoke Review and four became eight.

I did my best to balance work and play. Under my leadership as editor, the Review was a three-time finalist for Newspaper Excellence at the B.C. & Yukon Community Newspaper Association Awards. In 2016, I was named the Employee of the Year at the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. I pulled that off while squeezing in more than 50 days in the winter and mountain biking as much as possible in the summer.

However, I wasn’t able to maintain the balance and eventually the demands of being a one-person newsroom – editing a newspaper and website, and managing its social media channels – became too much. I left the Review  in September 2017 and spent the next six months riding my bicycle through the Andes from Bogota to Lima.

Refreshed and rejuvenated, I returned to Revelstoke, where I am now excited to bring my writing and editing talents to the world beyond the newspaper, whether it be a small business, local non-profit, government, or budding ski star.
